Benalla lies on the mid-way between Euroa and Wangaratta on the major road and railway between the cities of Sydney and Melbourne.
In ‘74, the Broken River, on which banks the town is situated, was dammed, forming a wide waterway popular as the Benalla Lake, which is the first attraction here. Swimming and boating activities are popular on the lake which is surrounded by parkland and walking tracks. On the western bank of the river are located Benalla’s well-known botanical gardens, which feature an art gallery, the Sir Weary Dunlop memorial statue and the city’s popular rose-gardens - housing over 2000 kinds of beautiful colorful roses. The eastern bank of the Lake is lined with a recreational park near to the council offices and a network of bicycle and walking paths, which traverse the islands across the lake.
Benalla’s business and commercial center begins at the eastern bank of Lake Benalla and is mainly centered along the Bridge Street.
The Benalla Festival is a community event carried out every year, usually in March, which celebrates the culture, heritage and food of the region.
Benalla offers numerous tourist attractions within a short drive from the town.
