Right on the Murray Valley Highway, on the bank of Murray River towards the south of the Laddon River is the city of called Swan Hill, the city that is the nucleus of the Central Murray Football League. Sports like horse racing and golf also have other forms of sport that is given prominence in Swan Hill. Swan Hill is a city that has an active night life with the presence of nightclubs, hotels, clubhouses and pubs.
A wharf built in the early part of 1850s is situated in Swan Hill and this made the city to be one of the major inland river trading ports in its region up to the time that railways were expanded in the region. The city of Swan Hill is one that has been known with agriculture with the presence of large citrus farms and vineyards.
Campbell Street and McCallum’s wide boulevard in Swan Hill are the hubs of commercial activities. The boulevard of McCallum goes across the Murray River the through a narrow bridge that was built in 1896, and it goes into New South Wales. The narrow bridge we are talking about here is one that can allow paddle streamers to go under the bridge through a central span that is on the bridge.
The city of Swan Hill is a city that surely knows how to keep memories alive. Historical landmarks can be found all around the city, like the well-designed town hall that was built in 1935 and a war memorial place that is surrounded with a garden of beautifully shaped conifers. Also, among the historic sites in the city, is the Burke & Wills Tree, a Moreton Bay fig tree that was planted in 1860 to honor the expedition of the famous explorers that passed through Swan Hill on their journey of Australia. This tree is believed to be the largest fig tree that can be found in the whole of Australia.
When you are going along the banks of Murray River, you will find quite a number of parks. Among the parks on this route is the Riverside Park on Monash Drive. Riverside Park has barbeque facilities, a playground where a lot of activities can be done, picnic areas, and a sound shell. Another attraction you should not miss is the Pioneer Settlement, a place that presents the atmosphere of a pioneer river port town. It is located at the point connecting Little Murray River and Murray River. Paddle streams cruises along Murray River on P.S. Pyap are among the thing on offer there. The P.S. Pyap was built in 1896, though it was faulty before, it has now been restored so that visitors can have to enjoy paddle stream cruises like ancient times.
About fifteen kilometers towards the south of the city is located a small community called Lake Boga, a town that has a natural lake that is about three kilometers in diameter. This lake is surrounded by swimming spots and camping areas for the enjoyment of visitors. |
